‐‐ Finding a Path Forward
A Collaborative Summit with MMSA, Colorado School of Mines and Trout Unlimited
Location: Colorado School of Mines – Date: April 26, 2018
The Mining and Metallurgical Society of America presents the Summit: Good Samaritan Protection to Enhance Abandoned Mine Land Cleanup ‐‐ Finding a Path Forward, to be held at the Colorado School of Mines. This Summit is presented in cooperation with Colorado School of Mines and Trout Unlimited.
The Summit’s Purpose is to gather a diverse coalition of stakeholders working to identify processes and partnerships to clean up Abandoned Mine Lands (AML). An overall objective of this Summit is to identify necessary liability protection from applicable environmental laws that will advance closure and remediation of identified pilot/demonstration projects. The goal is best achieved through Good Samaritan protections for those involved in cleanup projects.
The topics and summit breakout session discussions presented at the Summit will be:
· Laying out the Challenges. Identify social, political and legal issues impeding closure and remediation of AML Lands.
· Existing Issues Impacting AML Clean-up. Address social, political and legal issues related to AML cleanup within current regulatory structure and potential Good Samaritan protections.
· Breakout Groups. Three groups will address: 1) Legislative issues, 2) Legal issues, and 3) possible Pilot Projects with accompanying partnerships.
· Feedback and Actionable Items. Leaders from the three breakout groups will summarize their respective discussions including effective pilot (demonstration) project-focused Good Samaritan Legislation that includes projects, partnerships and the process to get the job completed.
This Summit is of interest to all stakeholders with an interest in accelerating the clean-up of existing hazardous/dangerous abandoned mines through Good Samaritan legislation. Stakeholders include individuals from mining companies, non-governmental organizations, and local communities.
